do the work
I’m finally emerging from the clutches of a virus that stole my voice and forced me to modify the plans I had for myself at work and home last week. A younger Erin would have tried to push through or use some “hack” to try to recover faster but a wiser me has learned to assess and to pivot. What I needed was more sleep, nourishing food, and less intense exercise. Especially since I had family commitments on the weekend that I wanted to be able to keep.
At the conclusion of the first event, I found myself discussing health and wellness with my cousin; we both commented on how as sexy as the latest diet or supplement appears, they are never a replacement for doing the work. I remember commenting once on Instragram that we need to take care of our bodies, as they are our micro home on our macro home. Just as we should be good stewards of the earth, we should also do the same for our bodies.
What do I believe the work is, in the physiological realm? The stuff our doctors have been telling us for decades: consistent and quality sleep, nourishing and various food, water, moving our bodies, and spending time with other people. Yes, it sounds boring; no, there is no substitute; yes, it requires discipline; no, there is not a single prescription that works best for all of us. You will have to experiment and figure out your ideal combination.
Heading into the last week of June, what’s one area that you want to try to get back to basics and find what works best for you?
Be well, beautiful people (and wash your hands).
